Design That Converts Foot Traffic Into Sales
Retail design is the craft of turning passers-by into customers: a shopfront that stops them, a layout that draws them in, displays that sell without a word, and a space that makes the transaction easy. Done well, it is measurable — in dwell time, in conversion, in sales per square metre.
Hospitality may be our name-maker, but retail is in our DNA. Shopping centres are where much of our work lives, and we design retail the way centres demand it: to the centre's design criteria, through the Retail Design Manager's review, and built for trade from day one. Kreativ Design is on the recommended designer list for Westfield Shopping Centres, with work across Scentre Group, Chatswood Chase and The Mix at Chatswood, Mirvac, QIC and Vicinity centres.

A Discipline of Centimetres
Retail rewards precision. In a typical tenancy — and especially in a kiosk — every design decision is a trade-off measured in centimetres and seconds:
- Display density vs browsing space — enough product to sell, enough room to want to stay
- Sightlines — the offer legible from the mall, the hero product visible from the approach
- Storage — engineered into the footprint so the sales floor stays a sales floor
- Lighting — used as a merchandising tool: product lifted, circulation guided, low-ambient locations corrected
- Counter position and queue flow — the transaction placed where it serves the customer and the staff, not where it was easiest to draw
- Finishes — materials that carry the brand and survive years of trade, chosen with maintenance in mind

Every Retail Format
In-line stores & shopfronts
Façade presence, entry experience and full fitout — the storefront is the hardest-working sign you own, and we design it to earn its rent from the first glance.
Kiosks & walk-through formats
Open formats are their own science: approached from every direction, owned on no wall, trading in as little as 25 square metres. A recent project transitioned a national retailer from a full-size store into a compact walk-through kiosk — open on all sides, display and storage maximised within the footprint, enhanced lighting to lift a low-ambient location, and a superstructure that gives a kiosk the architectural presence of a full store. Our food-retail kiosk work — Mr Pretzels at Hornsby and Parramatta, Potato Corner at Plumpton and Oran Park — runs on the same principles.
Pop-ups & rollouts
Brand consistency at speed: modular design elements, standardised schedules and repeatable documentation, so the fifth site opens faster and cheaper than the first — without looking like a copy of a copy.
The Centre Process, Handled
Retail in a managed centre means design review: your concept assessed by the Retail Design Manager against the centre's criteria before construction is approved. We prepare the submission, present the design, respond to review comments and carry the project through to approval — alongside the statutory pathway (CDC or DA) and coordination with the certifier. Accessibility is designed in to AS 1428.1 and the National Construction Code from the first layout, because retrofitting compliance into a retail footprint always costs floor space.
Working With Your Brand
Whether you arrive with a full international brand manual or a logo and an idea, we translate identity into space — colours, materials, lighting temperature, signage zones and display language — and where a brand crosses borders, we localise it for the Australian market without diluting it. It's the approach behind our international rollout work, and it scales from a single boutique to a national program.
The Retail Design Process
- 1. Feasibility — tenancy assessment, centre criteria review, services and compliance check before you commit
- 2. Concept — site measure, layout and display planning, brand translation, live 3D walk-through and an initial budget estimate
- 3. Design development — joinery, materials, lighting design and services integration, refined into a buildable package
- 4. Documentation & approvals — the full drawing set, centre (RDM) submission and statutory pathway managed for you
- 5. Pricing & delivery — fixed-price construction proposal, program, weekly inspections and handover ready to trade
How We Measure a Good Retail Design
Not by the photography — by the trading. The tests we design against: can a customer read the offer from the mall in under three seconds; does the layout pull them past the threshold and deeper into the range; can staff serve at peak without crossing each other; does the counter position capture impulse without blocking flow; and does the store still look sharp after two years of trade. Beautiful is the entry requirement. Effective is the job.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a retail fitout design take?
Comparable to our hospitality program: indicatively six to seven weeks from site measure to construction start for a typical tenancy, with layout locked by week two. Centre review runs within that program when the submission is prepared properly — which is the point of preparing it properly.
What does the Retail Design Manager actually review?
The design's compliance with the centre's criteria — shopfront design, materials and finishes, signage, lighting and how the tenancy presents to the mall. We design to those criteria from the start and manage the review on your behalf.
Can you design a kiosk that doesn't feel temporary?
Yes — that's the brief we love. Superstructure, lighting and considered materials give a kiosk architectural presence; storage and display planning make it trade like a store. Our walk-through kiosk work is proof it can be done in 25 square metres.
We're a franchise — can you work to our brand manual?
Yes, and we can improve how it's delivered: converting brand standards into an Australian-compliant design framework with standardised documentation, so every new site opens faster and to the same standard.
Do you handle the approvals as well?
Yes — the statutory pathway (CDC or DA), certifier liaison and the centre's RDM review are all part of our documentation scope. One team, one submission set.
Can you refresh an existing store without a full fitout?
Yes. Targeted works — shopfront, lighting, display systems, counter reposition — can shift a store's performance without a full rebuild, and we'll tell you honestly which lever is worth pulling.
What does retail design cost?
Design fees are fixed against a defined scope, and construction cost depends on the format and the tenancy's condition. You'll have an initial budget estimate at concept stage and a fixed-price construction proposal before building work begins.
